How Engraving Costs are Calculated

Reading time: 5 minutes

Calculating the cost of laser engraving involves more than just measuring a surface. For many of our clients in Graz and the surrounding Styria region, pricing can often feel like a black box. We aim to change that. Precise cost estimation is based on the interaction between material properties, the complexity of the motif, and the required machine time.

Whether it is a single personalized gift or a series of office signs, the core factors remain the same. In this guide, we explain in detail which parameters enter our calculation and how you can avoid unnecessary costs through proper preparation.

Precise measurement as the basis for material selection and price calculation.

1. The Role of the Engraving Area (cm²)

The fundamental unit of measurement for our price calculation is the square centimeter (cm²). Unlike laser cutting, where the linear path often determines the price, engraving depends on the total area the laser beam must cover. For example, an area of 10x10 cm means 100 cm² must be processed.

It is important to understand that we do not charge for the entire rectangular boundary of the object, but for the area actually engraved. A small line of text in the center of a large wooden board costs less than a full-surface raster engraving of a photograph. However, a minimum fee per order applies to cover the machine setup costs.

2. Standard vs. Detailed Engraving

Our pricing model distinguishes between standard and detailed engraving. This difference arises from the required resolution (DPI — Dots Per Inch). Standard engraving for logos or simple texts is performed at a speed optimized for clear readability.

Detailed engravings, such as photorealistic portraits on leather or high-precision technical markings on metal, require a significantly higher point density. The laser must pass over the same area multiple times or work in extremely small increments, which increases machine time and, consequently, the price. You can find the specific rates in our Engraving on Wood, Leather & Metal service page.

3. Material Influence and Laser Technology

Not every material reacts the same way to the laser beam. In our Graz workshop, we utilize both CO₂ and fiber lasers. The choice of system affects the efficiency and the final cost:

  • Wood and Leather: We use the CO₂ laser. Costs vary depending on the hardness of the wood, as different power levels are needed to achieve a deep, saturated color.
  • Metals: The fiber laser is used here. Since metal has higher reflection and resistance, the process is technically more demanding.
  • Glass: Engraving on glass is a subtle process that often requires specific focusing to avoid cracking.

4. The Importance of File Preparation

An often underestimated cost factor is the time invested in preparing your file. A perfectly prepared vector design (e.g., as .svg or .dxf) can be transferred directly to the machine. In contrast, low-resolution images (JPG or PNG) must be manually vectorized.

If we need to optimize your layout, we charge this as a design hour. To avoid these additional costs, we recommend our guide on File Preparation for Laser, where we explain how you can optimize your drafts for us free of charge.

5. Calculation Example for an Order

To illustrate the theory, let's take a practical example: engraving a company logo on a leather case for a client in Graz.

Item Calculation Cost (incl. 20% VAT)
Engraving area (5x3 cm) 15 cm² × 1.50 € 22.50 €
Setup/Configuration Flat fee 10.00 €
Layout check (brief) Included 0.00 €
Total 32.50 €

6. Cost Optimization: Tips for Clients

There are simple ways to lower the cost of your engraving without compromising quality. We recommend the following strategies:

  • Use Vector Graphics: Avoid raster images to save on design and vectorization fees.
  • Reduce Filled Areas: Consider whether a contour logo (outlines only) is sufficient instead of a full fill. This significantly shortens the laser time.
  • Batch Production: For higher quantities, the relative setup costs per piece decrease.
  • Material Choice: Standard materials from our Graz stock are often more cost-effective to process than exotic customer-provided materials that require test engravings.

7. Regional Specifics in Graz and Austria

As a local provider in Graz, we value transparent communication. We adhere to Austrian consumer protection guidelines and ensure that all prices are displayed including 20% VAT. For our B2B clients, we offer invoicing with a payment term of 14 days.

A key point for local customers: we avoid long transport routes. By delivering your materials directly to our workshop at Jakominiplatz, you not only save on shipping costs but can also select materials together with our specialists on-site.

Minimum Order

We process orders starting from a minimum value of 30 €.

Down Payment

For individual custom orders, a deposit of 50% is required.
